چکیده

Tuberculous meningitis is universally considered to be a fatal disease. Examples of spontaneous recovery have been reported, but they are rare and complete laboratory confirmation in most of these is lacking. In January, 1944, Schatz, Bugie, and Waksman2 reported the isolation of streptomycin. In November, 1944, Schatz and Waksmat3 demonstrated its marked bacteriostatic and bactericidal action against a human strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. In December, 1944, Feldman and Hinshaw' first showed the suppressive effect of streptomycin on "the pathogenic proclivities in guinea pigs of the human variety of Mycobacterium tuberculosis." The following case is cdescribed 'because ( 1 ) the use of streptomycin in the treatment of human tuberculous meningitis has not been reported, (2) streptomycin seemed to modify favorably the course of the disease, and (3) this is the first detailed report of the administration of streptomycin by the intrathecal route.

under critical observation at the present time. The advent of this new drug was greeted with much enthusiasm but further clinical experience on a greater number and variety of cases has led to better appreciation of its merits and dangers. It is true that in most cases of tuberculous meningitis the immediate effects of streptomycin therapy have been so striking as to promise hope of recovery. O...

The Use of Intrathecal Heparin in Conjunction with Streptomycin in the Treatment of Tuberculous Meningitis: Preliminary Report.

One of the commonest causes of failure in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis by streptomycin is the formation of intracranial and intraspinal adhesions with resultant hydrocephalus. These adhesions are produced par-tly as a result of the fibroblastic reaction that occurs around tuberculous foci, but their inception and growth may well be stimulated by the deposition of fibrin from the cere...

In all patients, ETB and PZA were withdrawn after three months and INH and RIF were continued for the next six months. 81.2 p...

Tuberculous meningitis treated with streptomycin and isoniazid without intrathecal therapy.

Isoniazid given orally readily and rapidly diffuses into the cerebrospinal fluid in health and disease (Fletcher, I952, 1953) and probably, also, gains access to tubercle bacilli within the cells. Adequate bacterio-static level of the isoniazid in the cerebrospinal fluid was found in both lower and higher doses. Throughout the illness Ritchie (I953) showed that isoniazid is more diffusible in t...
